On Saturday, November 25, a historic event took place. It was the sporting event of the century: the Saxabone Bowl.  This event was hosted and played by a group of “the least athletic kids in all of Elizabethton High School” (as said by Baylor Anderson), the band kids. It was the first of its kind, a flag football game played between the saxophone and trombone sections of Elizabethton High School’s Betsy Band.

The creator of this event was Travis Webb, a senior saxophone player. According to Travis, the brilliant idea came to him at 3 O’clock in the morning after realizing that the band does nothing outside of band. After asking him why he initially thought of football, he replied with “If they can do powder puff then we could do something at least twice as interesting.”

After finding a volunteer chaperone and filling out the required paperwork, the students were given permission to use the T. A. Dugger football field. On the days leading up to what would soon be called by many band kids “The Game of the Century”, the participants decided who would be on what teams and the rules of the game. Instead of pitting the saxophone and trombone players against one another, the two groups mixed to form their teams. The two teams which came out of this system were The Crab Cake Committee and The Solitarians. Jared Erwin was the captain of The Solitarians, and Travis Webb that of The Crab Cake Committee. When game day came around, tensions were high, but these were ignored as the teams approached game time.

The game kicked off at high noon, with Cara White as the announcer for the game. She announced the game was about to start as the teams took the field. There was a coin flip for who had first possession, and then the game was underway and the tension was high. It was a stressful game with many nail biting moments, but in the end The Crab Cake Committee emerged victorious with a final score of 22 to 18. Thus concluded the inaugural Saxabone Bowl.
