The Elizabethton High School department has produced many successful shows including Harvey, Peter/ Wendy, Barefoot in the Park, and now The Great Gatsby. On November 10th, 11th, 17th, and 18th, guests had to the chance to see the show at the historical Bonnie Kate Theatre. The Bonnie Kate is now being restored into a traditional theater, instead of the movie theater it once was.  All four shows were packed, several of the shows actually being sold out.

The Great Gatsby is a classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, commonly referred to as “The Great American Tragedy”, which highlights the social problems of materialism in the 1920s. Nick Caraway, played by Marquis Bush, moves to New York City for the summer to make money by pursuing banking. His cousin, Daisy Buchanan, played by Hannah Roaten, lives across the bay from Nick with her husband, Tom Buchanan, played by J.P. Abner. Jay Gatsby, played by Baylor Anderson, owns a huge mansion next to Nick’s small cottage. Everywhere Nick goes, the topic of conversation is some man named Gatsby. He finally meets Mr. Gatsby at one of the huge, raging parties Gatsby throws each weekend. Gatsby needs Nick’s  help  to reunite him with Nick’s cousin, Daisy. The tragic story emphasizes Fitzgerald’s disgust with society in the 1920’s, and how people were so focused on new money and glamour, they forgot basic human morals. This was told through the love of Gatsby, the jealously of Tom, and the indecisiveness of Daisy.

On stage, three painted flats representative of the Buchanan Mansion, Gatsby’s Palace, and George Wilson’s Garage in Brooklyn made up the set, painted by Katie Merritt and Emily Jenkins. The opening scene included a dance number with all the cast members choreographed by Abby Montford. There were intensly passionate scenes between actors Hannah Roaten and Baylor Anderson, as well Marquis Bush, and Mattie Carr, who played Jordan Baker, a friend of Daisy. Other cast members included Bess Allen, Bailey Marvel, Aubrey Toncray, Tiffany Hill, Max Garbe, Colton Grindstaff, and Kayla Vandaventer. Kallie Jenkins was also a well noted staff member. “As the stage manager, Kallie did more than I did,” said Mrs. Foster.

The last night of the show, Saturday the 17th, was also senior night. Director and Drama teacher, Mrs. Foster welcomed the seniors by introducing each of them on stage and telling a fun fact about them. With The Great Gatsby being most seniors’ last show of their high school careers, it was an emotional moment. At the end of the show, the seniors surprised Mrs. Foster by giving her a rose from each of the 12 seniors, making a total of a dozen roses. “We have something for Mrs. Foster because ‘you remind us of a rose, an absolute rose’” said Hannah Roaten, quoting one of Daisy’s lines from the play.
