In an effort to inspire a love of reading in younger generations, Bartleby students Meagan Young, Abigail Richardson, and Emily Richardson founded book clubs at T. A. Dugger Middle School, and the Elizabethton Boys and Girls Club.

The chapter at T.A. Dugger is open to all students, and has so far reported steady attendance. The books are selected by members of the club, and they are currently reading, “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.  At the moment, the club functions much like many others in the sense that people who have read the book congregate to discuss it. The clubs’ creators, however, have something more in mind. Megan Young says she and her companions hope to “take the class on adventures relating to the books they read, such as a trip to Grandfather Mountain.”

The version at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club is very similar to the one at the middle school, with only a few key differences: the age range (9-10 years of age), and that the founders do not plan on taking those members on similar field trips. When asked what new aspects they wish to implement in the future, Abigail Richardson said the addition of snacks was very likely, and commonly requested. Thus far, each club has had three meetings, and arrangements are being made to make them permanent parts of both institutions when the three students graduate in the spring.
